Functional Jaw Orthopedics

When a patient's upper teeth protrude, more often than not, this condition is due to a small lower jaw that is further back than it should be. In Functional Jaw Orthopedics, appliances are used to normalize growth discrepancies between the upper and lower jaw. One appliance often used to correct this problem is the Herbst appliance. The Herbst appliance encourages the lower jaw to grow in a forward direction by positioning it forward and holding it there. It also has the ability to push the upper molars backward. As with other types of braces, your Herbst appliance will be checked and adjusted by Dr. Taylor at scheduled appointments.
